Success story made in Bangladesh

This short video about a long-running milk co-operative in Bangladesh was made by Al Jazeera English to mark the United Nations’ International Day of Co-operatives in July 2010.

‘Success story made in Bangladesh’ describes how farmers in a remote village were lifted out of poverty by forming a milk co-operative called Milk Vita.

The co-operative, which was subsidised by the government, allowed them to set their own price for their milk and buy out the factory that had previously exploited them.

The video explains how, because they buy and sell milk locally, the co-operative was not affected by the global economic crisis. The co-operative is now expanding into other products such as butter and ice cream.
