You Can Make a Difference
The Young Co-operative at City of Ely Community College, Cambridgeshire, spread the Fairtrade message through their school during Fairtrade Fortnight, delivering three assemblies to Year 7,8 and 9 students.
The theme of the assemblies was You Can Make a Difference, with students using props such as Fairtrade chocolate, tea, coffee and a very large inflatable Fairtrade banana to explain what Fairtrade means to participating farmers.
The emphasis was on making students understand that, even though they are young, the choices they make when shopping make a difference to the quality of life for people in developing countries.
The following week the Young Co-Operative attended a workshop in Cambridge on Fairtrade and ethical business run by the Harambee Centre. As part of this day, they played the Chocolate game and really enjoyed taking on the personas of different families, although they were shocked at the level of poverty of some of the families.
